Believe the hype surrounding kombucha because this drink trend is here to stay.
Anyone who has gone grocery shopping in recent years has probably noticed the glass bottles of kombucha for sale in the beverage section. You’ve also probably noticed that health gurus everywhere are touting the drink’s benefits. As for the rest of us, the idea of fermented tea just doesn’t sound very appetizing, regardless of what the label says.
But we are here to tell you that it’s time to embrace the kombucha craze. It’s not going anywhere, and for good reason.
1. It is packed with probiotics and antioxidants.
To create kombucha, specific strains of bacteria, yeast and sugar are added to black or green tea, which is then followed by a period of fermentation. It is during this process that probiotic bacteria — the stuff that helps with digestion and inflammation, among other things — is produced.
And because the base of kombucha is tea, we are able to soak up many of its same benefits, such as tea’s polyphenols. Polyphenols function as powerful antioxidants in the body, according to Healthline Media. And simply put, antioxidants help stop or delay damage to your cells, which helps keep our skin and hearts (and more!) healthy.
2. It gets your gut in check.
Kombucha can kill bacteria. Over half of your body’s immune system is in your gut, and because of the probiotics in the drink, your gut is filled with healthy bacteria when you ingest it. Kombucha also contains acetic acid and the polyphenols mentioned above, which are both able to kill many potentially harmful microorganisms.
Studies have also found that drinking kombucha has some health benefits we may not expect. For example, Healthline Media also mentions that kombucha may help reduce your risk of heart disease because it helps improve cholesterol, and it may protect against cancer because it helps prevent the growth and spread of cancerous cells.
3. It can help keep you on track with your health goals.
If the health benefits alone aren’t enough to convince you to give kombucha a shot, maybe its ability to substitute for sugar-loaded drinks can sway your opinion. Kombucha is fizzy and comes in a variety of flavors. It is also low in calories and sugar, and it has a ton of health benefits. Overall, it’s a much healthier alternative to what soda-lovers might be craving.
