From our lovely contributors at This Mom S**t is HARD! Why being “nice” isn’t part of the mom gig.
This one may come as a surprise, maybe not so much to you, but maybe to everyone else who knows me. I’m here to admit, I’m not a nice mom.
Really, I’m not.
But frankly, I don’t care, because being a nice mom isn’t a part of the gig. At least not your mom’s gig.
It’s not that I’m not nice, I am. But being nice is not my job as your mom. Just like it’s not my job to be your friend. Or it’s not my job to entertain you. Or it’s not my job to make you happy. Or it’s not my job to be a fun mom.
It is, however, my job to turn you into a happy, productive member of society. And, in doing so, I’m required to do things that just don’t seem nice.
Not nice things like taking away your electronics when you break the rules. Not nice things like making you clean your room or do dishes. Not nice things like saying no. Not nice things like making you save money to buy an X-box. Not nice things like making you skip the birthday party. Not nice things like telling you things you don’t want to hear. Not nice things like disciplining your friends. Not nice things like making you go to bed. Not nice things like telling your Dad what you did or what you said.
